Refugee Week performance Diamond Ritz

ATTIC Theatre Company was commissioned to create an entertainment highlighting the issues of Distraction Burglary. The initial tour to London Boroughs of Ma Kelly's Doorstep in 2002 was an immediate success. Following this, a further show was commissioned looking at Safety in the Home, called Ma Kelly Plays It Safe. We have now performed the two shows 232 times in over two thirds of all London boroughs to 13,000 people and their carers. Our new play Ma Kelly Goes to the Games looks at healthy living and the fun that can be had making new friends and getting fit and active!

Ma Kelly Plays It Safe

by Jane James

An hour's entertainment, including a song or two highlighting issues of Home Safety.

Ma Kelly needs to take a good look around - since her friend Gertie died she's let things slip; and her landlord may be charming but he wants her out - so an accident would suit him fine! Gertie (deceased) sees Nellie is in danger and comes back from 'the other side' to warn her. Before long they have everything - including the landlord - under control and Nellie finds she quite enjoys 'playing it safe'.

Ma Kelly Plays It Safe was written in response to the 2004 government initiative on Home Safety. It is supported by the London Fire Brigade, Community Care Link and Social Services.
- It targets the over 60's and physically vulnerable and is designed to be presented in Day Centres, Lunch Clubs and Sheltered Housing Communities.
- It highlights the everyday causes of Fire, Falls and Food Poisoning in the home.
- It looks at the need for security and a safe home environment.
- The show is presented in conjunction with Community Care Link and Fire Brigade Officers who are present at each performance with relevant information and assistance.

"The excellent news is that we reckon 104 referrals for smoke alarms in Merton have been as a result of the Ma Kelly play, which I think is amazing."

Tony Sullivan, LB Merton Fire Brigade

"In Merton we have sponsored a series of plays ... by the Attic Theatre, ... I consider they have been a terrific success and recommend the play to you. It is well written, great fun and the audience participates well."

Doug Miles, MASCOT
